Togo, officially called the Republic of Togo (Republique Togolaise), is a country in western Africa, bordering Ghana to the west, Benin to the east, and Burkina Faso to the north. To the south it is bathed by the Gulf of Guinea. Its capital is Lome, while it has a total area of ??56,785 square kilometers, and a population of 7706000 inhabitants, according to official estimates for 2020.
The currency of Togo is the CFA West African Franc, while in the past the currency was the French franc and the Togolese franc. The language of Togo is French.
It was a German protectorate from July 1884 under the name Togoland. From August 1914
Togo came under Anglo-French rule until July 20, 1922, when British territory was annexed to Ghana. On April 27, 1960, it was declared an independent country.
In 2005 the longtime president of the country, Gnasingbe Ejandema, died and was succeeded by his son, For Gnasingbe. In the 2007 parliamentary elections for the first time all parties (including those of the Opposition) took part
and no serious incidents occurred. The ruling Togolese People's Alarm (RPT) party won the most seats in the election, securing 50 seats out of a total of 81 in Parliament, compared to 21 for the Opposition.
The CAR party won 4 seats.
